Description
An Olmec Reclining Female Las Bocas style, Mexico, c. 1200-600 BCE Solid burnished buff earthenware with red pigment on the head. This charming odalisque rests her head on her left arm and places her right on her thigh. Her elaborate coiffure has striated short hair on the sides and a central bun. This figure belongs to the "eyeless" Las Bocas style in which the orbits are blank. The proportions are naturalistically observed and the finely modeled face is individually and delightfully characterized. Provenance: A Private Collection, New York, NY, acquired in 2003 John A.
