Description
A Colima Female with Infants Autlan sub-style, West Mexico, c. 250 BC – 250 AD A charming, highly detailed image of a seated female with two diminutive children and a bowl of food on her lap, numerous other infants crawling all over her front and clinging to her back. Solid buff earthenware. Fashioned in the Autlan substyle of Colima ceramic art, sometimes called a "storyteller" because of their resemblance to other ancient and modern traditions of depicting females crawling with smaller figures. Certainly, this is a statue representing abundance and a delight in fertility. In very good condition, a spot of restoration on her back, likely some of the small heads reattached, small chip under proper right nostril of female. Provenance: A Private Southwestern Collection Ex. Private Collection, New York, NY Ex. Collection of Albert J. and Monique Grant, New York, NY, acquired 1950's-1960's, collection # 753 Height: 7 ½ inches HID03101062020 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
