Description
Portrait of Jos. Brant by George Catlin

Joseph Brant, also known as Thayendanegea, was a prominent Mohawk leader during the American Revolution. Born around 1742 (some sources say 1743) in the Ohio territory, Brant straddled two worlds. Educated at a Christian school and fluent in English, he also remained committed to his Mohawk heritage. Siding with the British during the Revolution, he led warriors and Loyalists in battle, garnering both respect and the nickname "Monster Brant" for the brutality of some raids. After the American victory, Brant relocated to Canada with his people, where he continued to advocate for Mohawk interests until his death in 1807. Though a controversial figure, Brant's life reflects the complex choices faced by Native Americans during a tumultuous period in American history.
