Description
Thomas Wentworth - Earl of Stafford

Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Strafford, was a significant but controversial figure in English history. Born in 1593, he started his career as a critic of King Charles I in Parliament. However, his views changed, and he became a strong royal advisor. As Lord Deputy of Ireland (1633-1640), he implemented reforms to strengthen royal control and increase revenue, but his authoritarian rule caused friction with Parliament. The inscription "OB 1641" you encountered likely refers to "obiit," the Latin word for "he died," indicating his death in 1641. Despite the King's initial efforts to protect him, Wentworth was impeached by Parliament for treason and ultimately executed. His death is seen as a pivotal event leading up to the English Civil War.
