Notes & Literature: The Smokey Stover comic strip ran from March 10, 1935, to February 27, 1973. It was created by Bill Holman and was originally syndicated by the Chicago Tribune. The strip was known for its wacky humor and its cast of eccentric characters, including Smokey Stover himself, a fireman with a penchant for cigars and wisecracks. Smokey Stover was a popular strip for many years and won several awards, including the National Cartoonists Society's Reuben Award in 1957.
