  • Artist Bio: Aleksandar Ljahnicky was born in Oklaj, Croatia. He graduated from the Faculty of Architecture in Zagreb in 1958. He studied painting and stage design with Professor Kamilo Tompa at the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Zagreb. Working in architecture, Ljahnicky specialized in the design of national pavilions in cities throughout the world: Trieste 1960; Graz 1960, 1984; London 1963; Brussels 1964; Damascus 1964; Nairobi 1965; Milan 1965, 1966; Plovdiv 1966; Paris 1967; Hannover 1966; Brno 1968, 1969; Tripoli 1968, 1969, 1970; Bari 1970; Warsaw 1970; Leipzig 1971; Beijing 1971; Moscow 1972, 1978, 1985, 1986, 1988; Nuremberg 1972; Tehran 1973, 1976, 1982; Abidjan 1973; Kuwait 1974; Budapest 1976, 1979, 1981, 1985; Basel 1977; Amman 1977; Lausanne 1979); Melbourne 1980; Prague 1981; Algiers 1983; Baghdad 1989. Many of Ljahnicky’s large-format paintings were installed in the pavilions that he designed. Taking advantage of the huge interior dimensions afforded by his architectural designs, he was able to experiment and to discover quite different and innovative artworks than those that can be created in a studio space. He patented the technique Hol-Pol. He has received many awards and acknowledgments in architecture, design, and sculpture. Many of Ljahnicky’s works are in private collections.
