Description
Dining out in the Munich of 1909 was clearly an exercise in excess, as shown in this poster by Ludwig Hohlwein for the Wilhelm Mozer restaurant. An elegantly appointed table overflows with riches - lobster, champagne, liqueurs; this is the place to be for a fanciful night out on the town!
This poster is done in the style of the Secession movement, an art style that sought to eliminate the distinction between decorative and fine arts, and artists and craftsmen. This movement yielded important artists such as Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele, and later evolved into the Bauhaus movement.
Ludwig Hohlwein (1874 - 1949) is an important figure in the history of poster design. He was trained as an architect but changed his career to advertising at age 30 (in 1904). He was among first artists to reject the Art Nouveau style and helped to usher in the Art Deco style in Europe. Over his career he created over 400 posters, and often depicted animals, such as this image for Panther brand shoes from the 1920s.
