Description
This is one of the rare examples of American WWII posters that feature a person of color. WWII occurred in the midst of Jim Crow laws, so the fact that this poster features George Washington Carver, an example of Black Excellence is a statement by the artist, William Kautz. The push for purchasing victory bonds seems to fade into the brick wall, while the plaque displaying one of Carver's famous quotes takes center stage.
George Washington Carver (1864-1943) was a brilliant and innovative American scientist who focused on the agricultural industry. He is perhaps most well known today for his advocacy of the peanut, which he promoted as a crop to replace cotton with as it nourished poor farmers. Born a slave, Carver became a symbol of hope in Jim Crow America, and worked to build the foundation that the Civil Rights Era would grow upon after his death.
