This painting was made by Stephen Sondheim's mother "Foxy" in 1949 during the period he attended William College. Having lived in Doylestown, Pennsylvania for many years, this painting may be of that area in spring. The tenuous relationship between Stephen Sondheim and his mother is well-known and thoroughly explored in Meryle Seacrest's Stephen Sondheim: A Life.
