Item Details
Description
Antique Tibetan or Chinese bronze Buddha-Exceptional large example. Remarkable for its incredible amount of fine detail, as well as for its beautiful face and deeply spiritual presence. In all my years of collecting and selling, Buddhist and Hindu sculpture, I’ve rarely had the good fortune of being able to offer a Buddha of this magnitude. When I first saw it, I almost passed it by as I assumed it was a modern copy, given it 23 inch size and it’s, elaborate robes and it’s close relationship to some of the related 15th century masterpieces that can go for $1 million or more. The face grabbed me and I could not help but give it a closer look. The longer I looked the more impressed I was with the incredible amount of detail work. It’s a little hard to see at first, but there is insized Design work inside the squares of the robe that show various astrological imagery. This is very much the same as on some of the 15th century examples that this Buddha emulates. It is extremely well with very crisp details. Spend time looking at the photos and you will see what I mean. It is quite heavy. It’s a little difficult for me to get an exact weight as it is difficult for me to manage, but it is more than 50 pounds. The packed box will weigh about 70 pounds. The base, which appears to have been consecrated until recently, looks to have been pried open a little bit in one spot. The inside must have been filled or largely filled with a mix of herbs, which had a large amount of rosemary or other fragrant herbs as they continue to, come out in small amounts through the small opening in the bottom in one spot. It could easily be sealed with. Wax or other Method of sealing, But I leave this to the next owner. All I have done is press the bottom a little bit to tighten it up a little bit.The wear looks correct In that it shows more where in the places where someone would have picked it up or would have cleaned it more on the right side(Most people are right handed) And this along with the casting and overall look and feel lead me to believe that this Buddha was made in 19th to early 20th century. It was made to” Honor the elders” And to emulate a revered 15 century style and not to deceive in any way. It really is as good as it looks in the photos. I literally had tears in my eyes, and the little hairs on the back of my neck stand up when I first brought it home and put it under a good light and really had a chance to look at it closely. All I wanted to do was sit there and gaze at it. It will be one of the hardest Buddha to let go of in many many years
