Charles Sumner
Boston, MA, November 16, 1867
Charles Sumner Signed Check
Signed check
Charles Sumner (1811-1874). Merchants National Bank of Boston check for $104 paid to H.D. Parker & John F. Mills, signed by Charles Sumner. Single check, 7.5" x 2.75", Boston, November 16, 1867. Check has been mounted to a thicker cardstock and shows some bowing and creasing, a few very light, small areas of discoloration, and the initial central punch after the check was cashed is evident - the only real sign the original paper check was mounted on a thicker cardstock. Otherwise, fine and boldly signed.
Charles Sumner was an American lawyer and Senator for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. He was a staunch abolitionist in the lead-up to the Civil War and dedicated his political service to opposing the Slave Power of the south in American politics, which resulted in him being brutally beaten on the Senate floor by Representative Preston Brooks in 1856. The grave injuries caused by this incident and long recovery left his empty chair in the Senate as a symbol of the anti-slavery cause. After the Civil War, Sumner advocated strongly for civil and voting rights for freed blacks. He served in the Senate up until his death in 1874 and he is remembered for his brave stance against slavery.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator of both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
