654. Jay Silverheels "Tonto" leather fringe tunic from The Lone Ranger. (ABC-TV, 1949-1957) This iconic instantly recognizable wardrobe piece is the key component of "Tonto's" iconic costume as the Lone Ranger's trusty sidekick in the landmark 1950s TV series. Made from tan leather tunic with fringe at the chest, sleeves and lower hem, with lace-up closures at both the left and right sides and internal Warner Bros. label handwritten "6/30/55 – Prod. 8546 – Silver Heels – Leather Shirt". We are aware of only one other Tonto tunic, which currently resides at the Gene Autry Western Heritage Museum in Los Angeles. This iconic garment is certainly one of the rarest pieces of television wardrobe to ever come up at public auction, and is truly an important piece of both Hollywood and television history.
