Description
767. Early Willis O ' Brien stop-motion articulated Tyrannosaurus Rex head. The articulated head was discovered at RKO Studios in the 1960s by stop-motion animator David Allen with a box of other dinosaur parts. The materials and structure are near identical to those which exist from King Kong[reference image shown illustrates this and is not part of the lot], however it has the appearance of being an earlier piece as it is made of a carved wooden skull with articulated moveable jaw and attached threaded rod at the rear of the skull to move the head up and down. It is possible it is a prototype for the Tyrannosaurus from King Kong or was part of one of the puppets built for Creation, an unfinished dinosaur adventure project O'Brien was working on at RKO in 1930/1931 which was to include a Tyrannosaurus family. 20 minutes of film was shot before it was scrapped by David O. Selznick due to expense. Approximately 4 minutes of the film survives today. O'Brien would begin work on the monumental King Kong, using some of the models and puppets that were built for Creation. It measures 6 ½ in. long x 4 ½ in. tall x 2 ½ in. wide and exhibits some discrete restoration work done on the left side lower jaw, shown with unpainted teeth.
