CSA Lieut. James N. Bell, Co. H, Southhampton Cavalry, 5th Virginia Cavalry, Photographic Archive†

Group lot includes: two quarter plate ambrotypes of First Lieutenant James N. Bell with his wife and daughter; one sixth plate daguerreotype of Bell in his youth; Bell's war dated Will and Testament; a war-date letter Capt. B.W. Belsches that makes reference to Bell's company; two cabinet cards of Bell's daughter, Nannie Claudia, as a young adult; one CDV of Bell's father; and supporting research documents. These two Confederate images, taken during the same sitting, show Lieutenant Bell wearing a dark blue English cloth frock coat with Federal style rank insignia that was typical for Southhampton County Confederate units in early 1861. Mrs. Bell is wearing an unusual brooch that contains a daguerreotype of her husband. Lieutenant Bell's military service includes surrendering to Union forces at Winton, NC in February 1862 and being paroled after signing an Oath of Allegiance to the United States in Norfolk, VA on October 4th, 1864. Bell re-enlisted with Company I, 13th Virginia Cavalry Regiment, in November 1864; there is no further record of his military service to end of war. One of these Confederate images has been previously published in the Confederate Calendar.†

Quarter plate ambrotypes in split full leather cases, one image is dark around edges. Sixth plate daguerreotype in half leather case; reglassed and retaped.
