Item Details
Description
George (Sir George) Clausen (1852-1944, British), "The Wave," 1892, oil on canvas, signed lower right, signed and dated en verso, presented in a gilt and gesso frame, H.- 17 3/4 in., W.- 15 3/4 in., Framed H.- 23 1/2 in., W.- 22 in.
Condition
There is no exhibition history that we know of. The consignor’s mother purchased the painting from an antique gallery in Pineville, Louisiana. Unfortunately, we have no other information. The painting looks to be in good condition with no visible signs of repairs. Under black light, the only area without varnish is the signature. The painting is on very thin, double-lined canvas, which was not uncommon for the time with this type of canvas. The back of the painting shows this double lining, particularly on the very top stretcher. There are no visible signs of damage to the back of the canvas and the aging of the canvas seems consistent. Overall, this is an exquisite example.
