Circa 1845 U.S. Militia Staff Officer's Sword.

Lot 52327 Details

Description
Circa 1845 U.S. Militia Staff Officer's Sword. 31" straight double edged blade etched for 3/4 its length. Obverse with extensive floral/scrollwork and arms panoply with liberty cap, the central theme being a tucked wing American eagle with hand engraved riband with motto above. The reverse displays similar etching but with the central theme of the bust of an Indian with a plumed feather head dress. Blade generally dark gray, all etching crisp and visible. All brass hilt with classic cruciform guard with acorn like finials and extensive leaf and scrollwork in the center. Identical work on both sides. Massive plumed helmet pommel, probably the largest we've seen. Beautifully carved ivory grip with nice mellow patina, perfect. The brass chain guard is a replacement. The hilt is perfect retaining 50% of the original gilt. Brass scabbard very impressive with panels of scrollwork engraving at each ring mount, 14" from the end of the scabbard and a 7" section on the bottom of the scabbard. Three carrying rings and elaborately relief decorated frog stud. Between the upper and lower ring mounts is an engraved spread wing eagle holding a shield. The two screws holding the throat in place are missing, currently held in place with a small wire. The reverse of the scabbard is plain. A few dents on the lower quarter of the scabbard, none serious, and the scabbard retains 30% of the original gilt. Classic and very attractive example of this very popular American officer's sword. From the estate of Houston collector Brent Burg.
