Item Details
Description
Manufactured 1876 with approximately 5,934 made in this model, most of which were purchased for the US military. The Schofield revolvers were issued to units such as the 4th, 9th, and 10th Cavalry, and subsequently found themselves in use in the American West. The 4th Cavalry was involved in Geronimo's capture. The 9th and 10th Cavalry were part of the legendary "Buffalo Soldiers". Manufactured in classic configuration throughout. The military requested that Smith & Wesson chamber the Schofields in the then-standard issue .45 Colt, which was too long to function in these revolvers. Smith & Wesson instead requested to design a cartridge that was .45 caliber and would work in both the Schofields and the Colt Single Action Army, which the US military then accepted. 2-piece walnut grips is marked with faint "CW" cartouche on right grip panel with "JRJr." cartouche on left grip panel. Additional markings include 1876 date on left grip panel and US mark on butt. Cylinder and butt have matching serial numbers. Grips are numbered 4740 on inside of both grip panels in different fonts. Martial subinspector markings can be seen at bottom flat of ejector housing and rear face of cylinder. CONDITION: Excellent for its age, with a majority of the thinning original bluing remaining mixing with a brown patina. Front and backstraps are mostly a gray patina. Hammer retains faded case colors. Left grip panel is excellent with markings legible and no major signs of distress. Right grip panel has been sanded with finish added and nail repair near cartouche. Mechanically fine. Bore is lightly frosted with crisp rifling. Barrel Length: 7" Caliber/Bore: .45 S&W FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Smith & Wesson Model: No. 3 Schofield Serial Number: 4740
