Item Details
Description
Jeremiah Snow, Sr. worked about 1760-1800 and was a Massachusetts silversmith who is known to have produced both horseman's sabers and short sabers in the Revolutionary era and after. For another example by this maker, see 192.S on pg. 125 of "Swords and Blades of the American Revolution" by George Neumann. For more information on this maker and to see a signed J. Snow example with this hilt, see pgs. 264-268 of "American Silver-Hilted Revolutionary and Early Federal Swords Volume I" by Daniel D. Hartzler. Jeremiah Snow III lived between 1735 and 1803 and was born in Boston and worked in Charlestown, Massachusetts. "Because of the desire for personal sidearms during the Revolutionary War, he turned to making brass cavalry swords for the Patriots", Hartzler states. After the war, he moved to Springfield, Massachusetts. This saber has been attributed to Snow, by virtue of the distinctive form of its brass, stirrup-hilt with open, side-loop to the right side of the counterguard, as well as the use of a three-fuller Spanish style blade. However, unlike most of his known sabers, which have urn-shaped pommels, this saber's pommel is olive or ovoid-shaped, with faceted capstan. The grip is unchanneled and appears to be of straight-grain maple with brass ferrules at each end (each with 3 lines of edge engraving around them). The saber is accompanied with a silver tablespoon by Snow, bearing his "I.SNOW" touchmark in a rectangular cartouche on the recto of the handle and the owner's initials "BM" in a cursive cipher on the obverse. Take note that the touch mark on the spoon is identical to that used on his swords and the example in Hartzler's book mentioned above. CONDITION: The blade retains a grey patina with a few "battle" nicks to cutting edge. Hilt retains a pleasing dark mustard patina. This sword is illustrated and discussed on pp. 190-191 of "For Liberty I Live." Blade Length: 34" Overall Length: 39 - 1/2" Paperwork: Spoon, Paperwork including previous description
