Item Details
Description
Remarkable 13/14th century Burmese Buddha in an Ava style mixed with Pagan influence as well as much earlier Himalayan??Buddhist Sculpture. Note the ripples on the robe which go back to both Himalayan and SE Asian Buddhist Sculpture to the 1st millennium.?Please check the photo with a ruler in it to determine the height. Unusual casting technique?Used on the robes. Each Ripple was added on top of the robe?Rather than being carved out of the robe or being sculpted into the robe. I have seen this a few other times on early bronzes, but it is an extremely uncommon and usually early technique. The Ava Style in?Burma came roughly after the Pagan,?Though in Burma?Dating Buddhist Style?is more complex than in many other countries?as there are many tribal groups that influence the style and form of Buddhist sculpture in various parts of the country.?Ava. Buddhas especially early ones have round heads and round fleshy faces. This is likely the influence of Ming and earlier Chinese Buddhas that had made their way to Burma, as China was a?Powerful neighbor to their North even back then.?Early Ava,?As in this case, sometimes had a strong Pagan influence. Take a look at the photos.?On a new museum-style custom base. Quite heavy. ( 10.54lbs / 4.780kg )
