Item Details
Description
the locomotive on 4 cast iron wheels with 2 9 1/2" drive wheels and 2 6" leading wheels, mounted to bearing blocks to the underside of the wooden frame (polished not metal sheathed as the original), with suspension leaves above, the boiler constructed of copper with D shaped flue tube with cross water tubes, authentic Planet position of the valve motion to the front of the cylinders with valve motion set for forward only with no reverse, with the long eccentric rods passing through a tunnel beside the cylinders, frame length 70cm, boiler length 52cm The model comes with an archive of letters and articles relating to the engine. The earliest is an article written in the Model Engineer Vol.81 No.1991 July 6, 1939. It discusses the engine in great detail. It was displayed in The British Engineerium, Hove for several years (1983-2006?) and comes with the relevant paperwork concerning its loan. Stephenson's Planet locomotive, designed and built by Robert Stephenson and Company in 1830, marked a significant advancement in steam locomotive design for the Liverpool and Manchester Railway (L&MR). As the ninth locomotive produced for the L&MR, it followed the groundbreaking Rocket and introduced notable innovations, including inside cylinders. This innovation led to the 2-2-0 configuration being dubbed "Planets." On November 23, 1830, No.9 Planet accomplished the remarkable feat of traversing the 50 km (30 mi) stretch from Liverpool to Manchester in just one hour. However, its service life was relatively brief, lasting around ten years before its retirement circa 1840–1841, following a rebuild in 1833. The success of the Planet spurred further orders from the L&MR, with six more commissioned from Robert Stephenson & Co., and an additional three from Murray & Wood in Leeds based on Stephenson's designs. The Planet, alongside the Patentee (introduced in 1834 and also a creation of Stephenson), represented the earliest mass-produced locomotive types. Notable enhancements featured in the Planet locomotive included the introduction of a steam dome to safeguard the cylinders from water intrusion, as well as the establishment of new standards for buffers and couplings. In 1992, a faithful replica of the Planet locomotive was meticulously constructed by the Friends of the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) in Manchester. Operated by dedicated volunteers, this replica offers rides to museum visitors when in steam, while also serving as a captivating display in the museum's Power Hall during downtime. The replica has graced various Heritage railways, including the Shildon Locomotion Museum. Notably, it even portrayed itself in an episode of the ITV/PBS television series Victoria.
