Description
A collection of original portrait drawings of very prominent gentlemen around the 1850's. Signed Jo Achten or Joseph Achten with handwritten notes in German. Joseph Achten (1822 - 1867) Austrian who studied at Stadel in Munich and Dusseldorf. He was a a color blind or color deficient painter who limited his work to pencil and grisaille on gray tinted paper. There are a total of 4 complete sketches and 2 that have started to separate. They are on 11" x 8.5" paper. Included is an antique mother of pearl inlaid book cover box that holds the sketches. It has jewels and an abalone inlaid design with gold gilt edges.
