Description: Frontispiece and 16 b/w plates from photographs. Publisher's red cloth stamped in gilt, top edge stained red. First theater edition.Includes autograph letter, signed, from the author regarding the play, noting "I'm looking for the 1st night of the Virginian... this melodrama will be crowded with amazed and delighted audiences." The Virginian was the first true fictional western, aside from short stories and pulp dime novels. Its success paved the way for many more westerns by such authors as Zane Grey, Louis L'Amour, and others.
