Intriguing 18th Century painting of Josef II, Holy Roman Emperor of the Habsburg lands (large area of central Europe). The painting depicts Josef II signing documents with one document under foot. I’m sure at the time this had great significance as he was promoting his reforms. Details to note are the 18th century style chair in the background and the portrait of Princess Isabela of Parma, his deceased first wife in the background. Joseph II (German: Josef Benedikt Anton Michael Adam; English: Joseph Benedict Anthony Michael Adam; 13 March 1741 – 20 February 1790) was Holy Roman Emperor from 18 August 1765 and sole ruler of the Habsburg lands from 29 November 1780 until his death. He was the eldest son of Empress Maria Theresa and her husband, Emperor Francis I, and the brother of Marie Antoinette, Maria Carolina of Austria and Maria Amalia, Duchess of Parma. He was thus the first ruler in the Austrian dominions of the union of the Houses of Habsburg and Lorraine, styled Habsburg-Lorraine. Frame: 18” x 25.75” Canvas 14” x 22”
