A PAIR OF SANCAI-GLAZED SQUARE DISHES AND A SANCAI-GLAZED QUATREFOIL 'LOTUS' DISH Liao Dynasty Each square dish with foliate edges and moulded with flowerheads and leaves accented in green and amber on a straw glazed ground, the base unglazed, 12.7cm (5in) wide; the shallow four-lobed dish with a flat amber and green-glazed rim decorated with a floral scroll, with a single large lotus bloom on the interior painted in dark green and amber on a straw-coloured ground, the unglazed base exposing the grey-buff ware, 27cm (10 5/8in) wide. The shape, based on gold and silver prototype, would have been relatively easy to produce in sheet metal and more difficult to make in clay.
