Eiichiro Sakata is a Japanese photographer with numerous work in key world galleries and museums. For his work, Sakata uses 8x10, 4x5 and 6x6 cameras and always shoots on film.
Graduate of Nihon University College of Art, Sakata in 1966, went to New York to work and study at the Richard Avedon studio.
From 1966 till 1969, Sakata began photograph people at the Times Square asking people ‘Just Wait’ to photograph them.
Gelatin silver prints of the Times Square people, formed his 1970 first solo exhibition ‘Just Wait’ at Ginza Nikon Salon in Tokyo.
Sakata is best known for his 1,000 cover portraits that appeared uninterrupted for eight years on the cover of the AERA weekly magazine (published by Asahi Shimbun) since 1988. In 2004, he held the solo exhibition Piercing the Sky, at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography.
His awards include Domon Ken Award, 2005, Photographic Society of Japan Lifetime Achievement Award, Photographer Award, Photographic Society of Japan, 2005. Arles Citizen of Honor Award, 1993.
