Description
A CARVED CINNABAR LACQUER 'LONGEVITY' PLAQUE
Qianlong
Of circular form, delicately carved with a lobed medallion of interlocking ruyi heads with a central roundel enclosing a stylized shou character surrounded by the characters wansui changchun (ten thousand longevities and eternal spring), set against a ground of scrolling clouds and bats, all within a border of sanduo sprigs and a key scroll band.
33.5cm (13 1/8in) diam.

A related panel, mounted as a tray with tixi lacquer frame is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession Number: 2015.500.1.92. A related bowl and cover in the Palace Museum, Beijing is published in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum - Lacquer Wares of the Qing Dynasty, Hong Kong, 2006, pl. 22. The combination of auspicious words and symbols makes it likely this would have been originally created as a birthday gift.

14cm long resin replacement rim section with 0.5cm loss at the edge.
Adjacent crack across the lacquer rim and small chip. Approx. 10cm crack running around the edge below the rim.
