Description
A CARVED CIZHOU 'FLORAL' BOWL
Northern Song Dynasty
The bowl with deep rounded sides, carved on the interior through the layer of creamy-white slip with two lotus stems issuing large open leaves, reserved on a combed ground, all beneath a clear glaze stopping above the foot.
21.7cm (8 5/8in) diam.

A bowl of similar form, but different decoration was recovered from the kiln site and illustrated in The Cizhou Kiln Site at Guantai, Beijing 1997, p. 68 fig. 28.

Condition
General old wear and firimg imperfections. Six spur marks to the well. Minor glaze chip to the rim. 0.3cm firing flaw to the rim interior.
