Description
Woman Cutting Her Mistress's Nails
(La Coupeuse d'Ongles -or- Die Nagelschneiderin)
etching on laid paper
4.75 x 3.5 in., sight
notes from a prior appraisal:
"Strong retouching on woman's dress and background, crosshatching on woman's breast.
Slightly rubbed in areas, age discolorations. Pencil annotations on reverse. Work is a scarce print that has been rejected by most Rembrandt authorities to be of the master's hand, it is possible that the print is a rework of a much more delicate image that no longer exists in an original state.
Biorklund reports work to be a reversed copy by an anonymous student of Rembrandt's painting at Rennes dated 1632. The signature and date were added later"
