DESCRIPTION: Russian lacquered large papier mache hinged treasure box, from the workshop of Osip Fillipovich Vishnyakov founded in the nearby village of Ostashkov in the 1780s. This box is decorated with a rendered reproduction of a famous painting by Jean Louis Victor Viger du Vigneau (French, 19th Cent.) depicting 'The French Empress Josephine presenting her Children to the Emperor Alexander at Malmaison'. The box is stamped on the interior with Vishnyakov hallmark. Includes the locking key.

Vishnyakov was a former serf freed from the Sheremetev Family Estate. Vishnyakov and his sons produced a variety of papier-mache lacquer ware items including: snuff boxes, tea boxes, eyeglass cases, matchboxes, and Easter eggs. They sold their wares in Moscow at the various fairs and markets. This workshop flourished into the mid-1800s.
