Greek Mythology Centaurs and Lady Bronze Statue
Greek Mythology Centaurs and Lady Bronze Statue
Item Details
Description
This is a depiction of a centaur carrying a nude woman on his back. In Greek mythology, the centaurs are a race of creatures composed of part human and part horse. In Greek mythology, they are symbolic of chaos and unbridled passion but can also represent honor, moderation, and tempered masculinity. This particular piece is modeled after the famous wild centaur in Greek mythology, Nessus. Nessus was a famous centaur well known for the story Tunic of Nessus, in which he was killed by Heracles, and whose tainted blood, in turn, killed Heracles. Nessus attempted to kidnap Deianira, the wife of Heracles, as he was ferrying her across the river Euenos, but she was rescued by Heracles, who shot the centaur with a poisoned arrow. As he lay dying, Nessus lied to Deianira, telling her that his heart blood would ensure that Heracles would never again be unfaithful. Deianeira foolishly believed him. Later, when she suspected Heracles was being unfaithful again, she spread the centaur\'92s blood on a shirt and gave it to her husband before he went to a gathering. Afterward, she realized it was actually poison, but by the time she sent a messenger to Heracles to inform him, it was too late. Heracles lay dying slowly and painfully as the shirt burned his skin-either in actual flames or by the heat of poison. A fascinating story. Cast in bronze using the lost wax method, ensuring a highly detailed sculpture that will add grace and beauty to any space. Dimensions: Height 21 X Width 18 inches. Weight: 52 LBS.
