Description
For your consideration are three stereoview photo cards from various publishers (Gurnsey, American Stereoscopic Company & Norman A. Forsyth) circa 1901 to 1911. The first in this lot was published by Norman A. Forsyth circa 1901 to 1911 and shows Native Americans of the Flathead Tribe sitting near a lake with their teepee set up. Three older tribe members are sitting near the teepees opening, while the two younger tribe members are walking along the shore near by. The bottom reads, "The Real American and the Simple Life". The back is marked reading, "Published by N.A. Forsyth. 120 N. Mont. St. Butte, Mont.". The second in this lot was taken by R. Y. Young and published by the American Stereoscopic Company circa 1903. It is from the Natural History Series and is titled, "Last Remnants of the American Bison, Yellowstone National Park U.S.A". It shows a smaller heard of bison standing in a grassy area below some towering hills. The stereoview photo reads, "American Stereoscopic Company Manufacturers and Publishers / New York U.S.A. 725-727 Broadway". The third and final stereoview photo was taken by Gurnsey's Rocky Mountain Views, published at Colorado Springs, Colorado, Pike's Peak Avenue. This is from the "Scenes on the Line of the Denver & Rio Grande Railway" series and is titled, "Burro Pack Train, In a mountain pass, loaded with merchandise for San Juan" and numbered, "109". It shows R.C. Luesley's Burro Pack Train as it heads through the mountains with merchandise and goods to sell at San Juan. Mules are loaded with packs and a few men look back towards the camera and pose. The back of the stereoview photo shows the publishers, the series name, the catalog number and the title. Provenance: From the personal collection of Francoise Perriot (Fran?oise Perriot), noted historian author of the West and Native Americans. Perriot?s published works include such books as ?Les Indiens et La Nature? (Indians and Nature) 2017, ?La Conqu?te du Far West? (The Conquest of the Wild West) 2007, ?Les Indiens d'Am?rique du Nord? (North American Indians), ?Guide Bleu : Etats-Unis Ouest Americain? (Blue Guide: United States West America). This piece and others come from her time collecting in Montana and the West, her book ?Les Indiens et la nature? is one of the most notable in France documenting photographs of the west. The stereoview photos show good condition overall with slight wear present from their age and use over the years, but no signs of obvious damage is noted. The actual photos show good condition while the cards they are set on exhibit the wear. The largest measures 3 15/16" L x 7" W, while the other two measure 3 1/2" L x 7" W.
