Featured in this lot is this 1910-1920s Grape Nut Cereal self-framed tin sign. In 1897, Charles William "C.W." Post created the cereal known as Grape-Nuts. Post later competed against Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, who had previously treated him as a patient. In order to create tiny kernels that resembled grape seeds, he cooked the cereal as a sheet, split it into pieces, and pulverized it in a coffee grinder. The cereal was sold as a natural food that might boost energy and well-being. Grape Nut Cereal is still being produced to this day. The tin advertisement shows a young girl walking with her St. Bernard dog as she heads off to school holding a small basket and a some flowers. Her dog carries a larger bag and her mother watches them from the front porch. The bottom of the advertisement reads, "To school well fed on Grape-Nuts 'There's a Reason'". The advertisement is constructed of tin and has a wood backboard to keep the advertisement sturdy, strong and to prevent any bending. The piece shows fair condition showing scratches throughout the image and wear from its age. No signs of obvious damage is noted. The piece measures 30 1/4" L x 20 1/4" W x 1 1/8" D. It weighs approximately 8 pounds and 8 ounces.
