Description
Antique Civil War Era Circular refuting certain tax computations and assessments, and addressed TO THE ELECTORS OF THE TOWN OF KINGSBURY. [TENNESSEE]. Dated November 5, 1864. Matted and framed under glass. Approx. Size: 17.5" H x 11.5" W x .75" D.
The rare circular states in part that, "A Circular has been addressed to you as "TAX-PAYES" so false in its statements as to require refutation." "It will not surprise any one that those, who, by forgery and fraud, have attempted to make the dead soldier vote against the cause for which he surrendered up his life, should resort to every other species of falsehood and deception to accomplish what their emissaries in arms have failed to accomplish, the destruction of our institutions."
The circular makes the argument that the total taxes to be assessed by the Town of Kingsbury has been vastly overstated at $55,600 or 6%, when the total should have been $31,295 or 3%.
"We, the undersigned have examined the foregoing computations and are satisfied that same are substantially correct. Nov. 6 1864." Signed in plate by Jacob Miller, Jacob Miller, Daniel E. Parks, Daniel Man'y, A. A. Miller, S. O. Cross, C. H. Cronkhite, Charles Cole, William Conger, N. W. Wait, H. B. Northup, Chas. Rogers, --- Holbrook, L. H. Northup, L. W. Cronkhite, W. H. Young, U. G. Paris, James H. Sherrill, Guy W. Clark, Charles Stone, Chas. Stone Jr.
