The Declaration of Independence, marking the official beginning of 200 years of American History, is read from a balcony of the Boston States House, July 18, 1776. Editors polled by The Associated Press picked the Revolution itself and the framing of the Constitution as the top stories in the two centuries since. This drawing from the National Archives depicts only a few hundred persons on hand to hear the news read in Boston two weeks after the event in Philadelphia.
