Description
Maxine Noel was born in Manitoba to Santee Oglala Sioux parents, and her formative years were spent on her mother's reserve. However, at the age of six, she left to attend an Indian residential school. Although Maxine initially pursued a career as a legal secretary, her passion for painting and drawing gradually took precedence. She embarked on an advanced design course where one of her instructors recognized her affinity for linear expression and encouraged her to explore the use of shape and line to convey motion—an influence that still permeates her current body of work. Over time, Maxine has honed her skills in painting, drawing, and various printmaking techniques like serigraphy, etching, and stone lithography. More recently, she has ventured into creating editions in cast paper and limited edition bronze castings.
Today, Maxine enjoys a positive reception to her art, enabling her to dedicate herself fully to the creative process. She signs her artwork with her Sioux name, IOYAN MANI, which translates to "Walk Beyond."
