Ancient Near East / Central Asia, northwestern Iran and southern Azerbaijan, Amlash, Iron Age, ca. 1200 BCE. An ancient near eastern grayware pot with a pair of pierced lugs to the sides of the mouth for suspension or securing a modern lid in place. Highly burnished monochrome wares may have been created to mimic the shiny surface of precious metal vessels, gray and black pottery appeared during the Iron Age, the coloration due to a firing technique in an oxygen reducing atmosphere. Size: 4.5" Diameter x 5.75" H (11.4 cm x 14.6 cm)
Provenance: private Greenwood Village, Colorado, USA collection, via inheritance; Leota Furlong Agett Persian Pottery collection, acquired in Tehran, Iran in the early 1960s

Condition
Chips to rim and abrasions to body. Lug repaired with stable hair line fissure. Light mineral encrustations on interior. Lid is a modern addition to demonstrate possible use.
