East Asia, China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. A lovely pair of pottery vessels - a ladle and a bowl - both enveloped in a lustrous light green pigment. First, the ladle presents a unique shape of a square rim with inward curving sides and flared corners, all sitting upon a circular base. A cylindrical handle extends from one side exhibiting a zoomorphic finial resembling the head of a dog or dragon with a long, pointed snout. Alternatively, the other example displays a more traditional form with a planar base, a hemispherical body, and a flared rim. Several incised horizontal bands additionally adorn the exterior of the bowl, and naturally-formed rainbow iridescence further complements its elegant form. Both have been professionally repaired with some light restoration over break lines, as well as minor chipping to rims and nicks and abrasions as shown, all commensurate with age. Otherwise both are nice with good remaining glaze and rich earthen encrustations throughout. Pretty iridescence to areas of bowl.
