Native American, Northwestern United States, Alaska, Athabascan (Dene), ca. mid-20th century CE. A pair of calf high moccasins or mukluks handmade from red wool felt, leather with beadwork, and otter fur. These were purportedly collected in Nome Alaska in the 1960s and may have come from Athabascan (Dene) people. Mukluks are the traditional cold weather boots of Arctic people and traditionally made of fur; the word comes from the Yupik word "maklak" for bearded seal. With European influence, the techniques and materials were adapted to meet greater artistic demands and tourism. This pair may have been made for sale or dancing. Stains and discoloration to hide, especially on soles from use. Beading is intact and excellent. Some minor fraying to stitching to felt and hide seams on the interior. Good vintage condition.
