A North European Swept-Hilt Rapier Second Quarter Of The 17th Century With tapering double-edged blade (old light pitting) of flattened hexagonal section changing to diamond section towards the point, central fuller on both sides of the forte incised with letters between various marks including 'MONTE EN TOLEDO' on one side, rectangular ricasso etched with indistinct bladesmith's name in capitals beneath a crown on one side, and 'IN TOLEDO' beneath a crown on the other, blackened iron hilt of slender bars of diamond section comprising long diagonally recurved quillons (one with two old fractures) swelling towards the tips, three outer-rings each with central swelling, the smaller bottom one fitted with a plate embossed and pierced with a female demi-figure amid foliage, the upper one joined to the knuckle-guard with scrolled terminal pierced with a hole, downcurved arms, inner-guard of four bars swept-up to join the knuckle-guard, faceted globular pommel with button, and grip of octagonal section bound with twisted brass and plain steel wire between Turks' heads 108.5 cm. blade This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * * VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.
