Description
A Russian Cloisonné Enameled Gilt Silver Icon of Christ Pantocrator Retailer's mark of Morozov, Maker's mark of Natalia Makarovna Bobir, St. Petersburg, 1896-1908 5-1/8 x 3-3/8 x 3-3/4 inches (13.0 x 8.6 x 9.5 cm) This beautiful icon was retailed by Morozov, one of St. Petersburg's premier merchants of silver and enamels. To keep up with demand, the firm sometimes acquired works by other artisans for sale under their own label. The offered lot is one of these, and bears the hallmark in Cyrillic "NB" of the little-known Natalia Makarovna Bobir. Bobir was one of the relatively few female masters in silverwork in the Russian capital, and is recorded in 1890 and in 1896 as having workrooms and a retail shop in St. Petersburg. She is known to have supplied Morozov with high level work such as the offered icon. Property from the Nelkin Collection HID03101062020 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
