Apollo 11
n.p., ca. 1969
Rare Apollo 11 Protective "Kapton" Foil With Signed Letter by "Buzz" Aldrin
Relic
A rare and desirable relic from the historic first flight to the moon on July 20, 1969, 1/8" square piece of ‘Kapton" foil which protected the spacecraft "Columbia" and her astronauts from the extreme environment of deep space. Presented in plastic and affixed to gilt-accented typed letter signed by Edwin A. "Buzz" Aldrin, lunar module pilot for the flight, explaining the origination of the foil and establishing its provenance. Fine condition.
The foil, which has a gold-tone front and silver-tone back, played a critical role in the success of the flight by reflecting the sun's intense heat off the ship and thus preserving a comfortable temperature within. Due to the fragility of the foil, much of it burned off during the 25,000mph reentry into the Earth's atmosphere, but a small portion was recovered, from which this example was taken.
Edwin A. "Buzz" Aldrin (b. 1930) was lunar module pilot for the Apollo 11 flight, and the second man to walk on the moon.
