Superb Susan B. Anthony Signed Book: "Yours For the Battle to the End…"
Signed book

A superb book signed by Susan B. Anthony: Volume IV of "The History of Woman Suffrage," eventually complete in six volumes, edited by Anthony and Isa Husted Harper (Indianapolis: The Hollenbeck Press, 1902), 1143pp., 6.25" x 9.5", thick 8vo., in burgundy coated linen with gold title at spine. Spine is loose with cover partially detached; boards exhibit wear, first front endpaper loose, bumped corners and loss of gilt; interior pages are lightly toned with endpapers fragile at edges. Inscription and signature are nonetheless very good.

Just seven months before her death, Anthony signs a lengthy inscription on the first free endpaper: "Miss Adelaide Ballard Hull Iowa It is with the greatest pleasure that I present you with this volume to complete your full set of this History of Woman Suffrage – a record most wonderful of the struggle for Liberty – no other class has made such a valiant fight. Yours for the battle to the end. Susan B. Anthony Rochester, N.Y. August 28, 1905."

Adelaide Ballard (1842-1922) served for three terms as President of the Iowa Woman's Suffrage Society.

In 1905 and at the age of 85, Anthony met with Preside Theodore Roosevelt in Washington after submitting a suffrage amendment to Congress. Less than a year later, she would give her "Failure is Impossible" speech at her 86th birthday celebration. She died at her home on March 13, 1906. The 19th Amendment was ratified in 1920.

Susan B. Anthony (1820-1906) was a pioneer crusader for the woman's suffrage movement and the driving force behind the 19th amendment. Anthony did not live to see the achievement of women's suffrage at the national level, but she still expressed pride in the progress the women's movement had made. At the time of her death, women had achieved suffrage in Wyoming, Utah, Colorado and Idaho, and several larger states followed soon after. Legal rights for married women had been established in most states, and most professions had at least a few women members. 36,000 women were attending colleges and universities, up from zero a few decades earlier." Two years before she died, Anthony said, "The world has never witnessed a greater revolution than in the sphere of woman during this fifty years." Anthony died in Rochester, New York at age 86 in 1906.
