Theodore Roosevelt's Son Quentin Photo of Crash Scene
Photograph

A morbid black and white photograph of the crash scene of Quentin Roosevelt's Nieuport 28 plane with Roosevelt's body in the foreground. Captioned in pencil on verso, "Quentin Roosevelt beside his plane (see reverse of small photo!)" Measuring 8.5" x 6.75", n.p., n.d. The photograph has edge and corner wear. Silvering throughout. Small tears and bumping at the corners. Mounting residue on verso. Overall very good.

Quentin Roosevelt (1897-1918) was the youngest son of President Theodore Roosevelt. He joined the US Air Service with the newly formed 1st Reserve Aero Squadron. Upon the U.S. entry into the First World War, Roosevelt became a pilot with the 95th Aero Squadron as part of the 1st Pursuit Group. The unit was posted to Touquin, France, and later to Saints, France. Roosevelt had one confirmed kill of a German aircraft during the German Spring Offensive, which he shot down on July 10, 1918. Four days later, in a massive aerial engagement at the commencement of the Second Battle of the Marne, he was himself shot down behind German lines. The German military buried him with full battlefield honors, but for propaganda purposes, they made a postcard of the deceased Roosevelt and his plane. However, this was met with shock and disapproval in Germany, as many still held Theodore Roosevelt in high respect and were impressed that a former president's son died on active duty. Roosevelt was posthumously awarded the Croix de Guerre with Palm by the French government.
