Anti-Clay and Adams "New Hampshire Patriot" Issue: "CORRUPTION" and Slander Against Jackson
Newspaper

An Extra issue of the "New-Hampshire Patriot" with a scathing article on Henry Clay and John Quincy Adams' "corrupt" campaign against presidential nominee Andrew Jackson. 8pp, measuring 5.75" x 8.5", Concord, New Hampshire, dated October 20, 1828. The majority of the publication is taken up by an article entitled "A Voice From Kentucky", which lambasts Clay and Adams for their apparent hypocritical actions in the run up to the election. With moderate toning, scattered soiling, and dampstaining throughout. Bumped edges and corners. Slightly uneven edges. Very good overall.

Highlights from the article include:
"?Warmly attached to Henry Clay, knowing that he possessed many talents enough to be a great man, and having fondly hoped to see him, at some future day in the Presidential Chair, it was hard for many of his former and devoted friends to believe him so base, as to have betrayed them, his own principles and the best interests of his country, by placing, through his influence, a man in the Presidential Chair, whose views and feelings have always been at war with our system of Government?boasting that he and Adams would make themselves popular, not by a correct and wise administration of Government, but by the power of the governmental patronage?"

"Kentucky saw with feelings of deep mortification 'CORRUPTION' indelibly stamped upon the brow of her once favorite, though now most despised son, whom she has discarded forever? It is unnecessary to recapitulate the events which preceded the last Presidential election, because numerous publications have made them familiar to the people. Mr. Clay having obtained the lowest vote in the electoral colleges, found himself under the necessity, in the House of Representatives, of throwing his vote and influence upon one of his competitors? The object of Mr. Clay's ambition was the Presidency. He had learnt to consider the patronage of the government as the sure means of securing an election, and the Secretary of State as the certain successor of the President. He was virtually promised any station he might ask?that he might expect the aid and support of Mr. Adams and all his friends in his future advances upon the Presidency?"

"To re-elect Mr. Adams and secure the succession to Mr. Clay, it was necessary also to blast the fame and destroy the character of General Jackson. To this end, the most abandoned of the venial band are set to work to forge all sorts of falsehoods upon him, which rapidly pass from press to press and from tongue to tongue, from the centre to the extremities of the Union. One wave of slander has scarcely time to subside when another comes rolling on, and thus the ocean of public opinion is kept in continual agitation. Gen. Jackson is alternately represented as an aristocrat, a tyrant, a bully, a liar, a corrupt negotiator, horribly profane, a negro trader, a land speculator, an atheist, a seducer, a slanderer, a murderer, and now the whole mercenary host are attempting to make him out a traitor!..."
