Rocco Francis "Rocky" Marciano (1923-1969) was born in Massachusetts to Italian immigrant parents. As a youth, he worked out on homemade exercise equipment. He played high school baseball and football before dropping out after the tenth grade. He worked at various manual labor jobs until being drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943. He was stationed in Wales and helped to ferry supplies across the English Channel into France. He completed his military service in March 1946. While awaiting discharge, he won the 1946 Amateur Armed Forces boxing tournament. From 1946 to 1948, he compiled an amateur record of 8-4. He began his professional career in July 1948 with Charley Goldman as his trainer and competed until 1955. He held the world heavyweight championship from 1952 to 1956 and remains the only heavyweight champion to end his career undefeated. He defended his title six times and finished his career with a record of 49–0. He was killed in a small plane crash in Iowa.
