"Franklin Almanac, For The Year of Our Lord 1830, Being The second after Bissextile, Or Leap Year. Arranged after the System of the German Calendars.

Containing:

The Rising, Setting, and Eclipses of the Sun and Moon, the Phases, Signs, and Southings of the Moon, the Aspects of the Planets, with the Rising, Setting, and Southing of the most conspicuous Planets and fixed Stars, the times of High water at Philadelphia, the Equation of Time, and other Miscellanies, &c., &c."

Carefully calculated for the Latitude and Meridian of Philadelphia", by John Ward, of New Jersey.

Published and sold by McCarty and Davis, Corner of Race and Ninth streets, Philadelphia.

Soft cover, the strip of cloth is attached to the spine [see photo]; 6.1/2" x 7.3/4"; 34 pages, some soiling and wear; corner and edge damages, slightly loose binding, fair/ good condition. See photos.

In addition to the contents listed on the title page, the Almanac contains recipes, useful hints, remarkable events, and articles:

How to make white house paint; Tunisian Cement, Franklin's Junto; The recipe for the "celebrated Elixir of long life"; short stories, critical article about damaging impact of corsets, the medicine against rheumatism, colds, headaches, &c--- white mustard seeds; other cold and headache remedies; the recipe for "Tomato Catsup," true anecdotes, recipes how to color cloth, and how to make it water-proof.

William McCarty and Thomas Davis acquiring the publishing and book retail business in 1815. The company was originally founded by Jacob Johnson in 1780, only selling children's books at first. In 1800, Johnson partnered with Benjamin Warner and the business was named Johnson & Warner. In 1815, the two sold the firm to William McCarty and Thomas Davis. The new owners of the firm would be wholesale book publishers of British dramas, the works of Shakespeare and many law books. McCarty eventually retired and Davis perished in 1850.
