Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A set of 9 hand-carved Spondylus shell pendants exhibiting hues of orange, yellow, and white. Five of the pendants are carved into rough rectangular shapes, 3 depict abstract zoomorphic creatures, and 1 shows a human face at the end of a tapered, incised body. Pendants like these were typically worn as status symbols by those in the upper classes. Size (largest shell): 2.80" L x 1.67" W x 0.67" H (7.1 cm x 4.2 cm x 1.7 cm); (display case): 12.25" L x 8.25" W x 0.875" H (31.1 cm x 21 cm x 2.2 cm)
