Spanish Colonial Iron Spear Head Found in Alabama
Spanish Colonial Iron Spear Head Found in Alabama
Item Details
Description
Native American, Southeastern United States, Alabama, Coosa County, ca. 1540s to 1600s CE. A Spanish Colonial era spear head that was discovered in Alabama. The modern day county, Coosa, where this was discovered, is named after the Coosa (Muskogee Creek) people. The Spanish expedition led by Hernando de Soto was probably the first contact the Muscogee had with Europeans. They traded iron tools for gold or other New World treasures, and this spear may have been such an artifact - perhaps peacefully traded or lost during a violent conflict. Size: 12.25" L x 1.75" W (31.1 cm x 4.4 cm)

Provenance: private Reinsmoen collection, Clear Lake, Iowa, USA, acquired through descent from Robert Anderson, acquired prior to 2000; purportedly found in Coosa County, Alabama, USA, 1850 to 1870s
