Item Details
Description
Rare silver inlaid bone marrow / snuff scoop with folk art decoration. Dated July 21, 1823. Inlaid silver hearts and initials "MAS". Made of carved bone and decorated with an inset glass or moonstone jewel and folk art designs of hearts, leaves and a Pennsylvania Dutch style bird. The best example of this type of early tool that we have seen. Likely a presentation piece.

LENGTH: 4 5/8" (12 cm)

PROVENANCE: Private collector.

NOTES / REFERENCES: Often called marrow scoops, these little bone spoons were actually multi purpose ... used for extracting bone marrow, measuring snuff, medicinal ingredients or even just coring fruit.
