Description
Pair of Chinese Door Guardians Handpainted Woodblock Prints. These are woodblock outline prints, handpainted and printed on a thin tissue like paper. The guardians, Shen Tu and Yu Lei, were hung on doors as a New Year's tradition, serving as protection against evil spirits and demons. These were purchased May 2001 from Bermondsey Antique Market, London, England, from a collection of Chinese folk Woodblocks. The Englishmen who originally collected them in China (soldier in Opium Wars? Boxer Rebellion? Missionary?). With pencil and ink inscriptions in lower left describing their purpose and then signed lower right. Wood blocks are professionally framed. Visible images measures: 13 3/8" X 19 3/8". Frames: 22 3/8" X 28 3/8". Condition- Woodblocks are in overall good condition with some toning. One guardian has foxing. See photos.
